2021 is coming to a close and as the year wraps up, weβve taken a look at the top stories for our readers this year on Hello Georgetown. Lots of things have happened this year, from new business openings, to fun festivals like POPPtoberfest and the Christmas Stroll, to touching stories of giving and generosity, and more!
Here are the top five most viewed stories from 2021:
1. Aldi Open in Georgetown
All throughout 2021, we received lots of questions from eager readers about the arrival of Aldi in Georgetown, TX. The much anticipated grocery store opened on August 12 and is located at 926 W. University Avenue.
βIβm really excited about the opportunity to offer the Georgetown population an opportunity to save money on their everyday groceries,β Karla Waddleton, ALDI Rosenberg Division Vice President, told Hello Georgetown. βTheyβll no longer have to clip coupons or look for sales when they can get everyday value by shopping us on a regular basis. We can really provide their fresh groceries and the things that theyβre looking for for their weekly shopping trip here at Aldi.β
2. Goodfolks Open in Georgetown!
When construction began on the inside of the M.B. Lockett building on the Square, Georgetown watched to see what would occupy the historic building.
We learned in December of 2020 that a restaurant named Goodfolks would be coming to Georgetown and throughout 2021, we followed their progress through their opening on October 21.
βI really hope we put out a good, comforting vibe where people can come in and they donβt feel rushed or want to be pushed out of here,β Mitchell Donahue, General Manager at Goodfolks, told Hello Georgetown. βThe idea is to feel like youβre going to a family memberβs house and youβre more than welcome to stay as long as you like and if you want pie a half hour after you eat dinner, then thatβs not an issue. We have a full service bar, we have boozy milkshakes and we really want people just to stay and feel at home.β
3. When Is Costco Coming to Georgetown?
We see questions about Costco probably more than any other in our email inbox. This year, we had a couple of updates and we are constantly working to confirm information for new updates.
In our most recent update, we learned the City of Georgetown Planning and Zoning Department listed Costco Wholesale on their agenda for their Tuesday, July 20 meeting.
The store will be located 2201 N. IH-35, off Airport Road and Lakeway.
4. TXB Convenience Store Open in Georgetown!
In August of this year, Georgetown welcomed a new gas station and convenience store, TXB or Texas Born. The location is the first brick-and-mortar market opening following the companyβs rebranding from Kwik Chek to Texas Born (TXB).
The new location offers a variety of dining options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and more!
βWe are super excited to be here,β Kimberly Guerrero, Manager of the Texas Born Georgetown location, told Hello Georgetown. βWeβre ready for Georgetown to know that our doors are open and welcome them in, and show them that southern hospitality.β
5. Kilwins Open in Georgetown!
Another new business on the Square appeared this year β Kilwins! The store opened in August and includes a variety of tasty treats including fudge, ice cream, caramel corn, and more!
βWe actually make everything in store,β Kurkowski said. βSo, youβll see us paddling fudge, youβll see us slicing it up. Potentially, if you come in when weβre making a loaf, youβll get to try it out. Itβll be on the table. So, you get to try a nice warm, fresh slice of fudge, right off the table. We also make our own caramel corns, we make all the caramel that goes on the corn, and then we actually make the popcorn, as well, in store. So, we coat all that here in storeβ¦youβll be seeing all those items being cooked as you come in the store to check it out.β
