Itβs a bird.Β Itβs a plane.Β Itβs flying dogs.Β Did you know that dogs can fly? On the weekend of November 4th, 2023, Wag Heaven Pet Supplies and Self-Serve Dog Wash, Nulo Pet Food, Southwestern University, and The Flying Disc Dogs of Texas pooled their efforts to sponsor and support the Disc Dog World Qualifier Weekend Competition in Georgetown, Texas. This is the first ever event held in the fastest growing city of Georgetown, Texae, as well as the campus of Southwestern University.
Competitors gathered from as far as Colorado to show off the athleticism in their dogs to qualify and compete for spots in the United States Disc Dog National (USDDN) World Championship.Β The US Disc Dog Nationals is an exciting format in which any team can compete regardless of their Club membership status or affiliation within the sport.
βDogs were being tested through games, such as 4-way play, spaced out, throw βn go, and time warpβ said Tammy Montgomery of the Flying Disc Dogs of Texas.Β βThen, they were tested during their performances in toss and fetch, as well as freestyle routines.β
Spectators were entertained by choreographed tricks and routines set to music as handlers tossed multiple discs to their canine companions.
βWe learned that some of the competitors train and compete with rescued dogs and multi-breed canines,β added Jeff Manley of Wag Heaven.Β βMany of them easily defy gravity, jumping well over my height.βΒ Β Β
βTheir ability to keenly focus on the discs, catching them in mid-air and quickly returning them to their handlers is quite impressiveβ¦off the chart,β nodded Nick Doxey of Nulo Pet Food.Β βSo proud to be supporting these four-legged athletes.β
