National Pickleball Day is coming up this Friday, August 8, and there’s no better time to check out one of Georgetown’s fastest-growing sports.
Whether you’re brand new or already hooked, it’s the perfect excuse to grab a paddle and hit the courts. It’s the perfect moment to try out a sport that’s fun, social, and surprisingly good for your health. And guess what? You don’t have to go far to play.
Georgetown’s own McMaster Athletic Complex has great courts ready for you.
What Is Pickleball?
Pickleball blends tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It’s played on a smaller court with a lowered net and uses a lightweight paddle and perforated plastic ball. It’s easy to learn, low-impact, and accessible for all ages. That makes it ideal for beginners—and still exciting for seasoned players.
Whether you’re looking for movement that’s easy on the joints or a fast-paced rally, pickleball delivers. Bonus: the social energy on the courts, the playful bubbles of connection, chat, and cheers… is one of the biggest draws.
Health Benefits
Pickleball isn’t just about having fun—it comes with measurable physical and mental perks:
-
A 2023 Apple Heart and Movement Study found that frequent pickleball players had 60.1% lower odds of showing signs of depressed mood compared to the general population. That’s even better than tennis players in the same study.
-
Add in improved heart health, hand-eye coordination, agility, and balance—and you’ve got a full-body workout that can burn up to 36% more calories than a brisk walk, while delivering big mood boosts.
-
Studies also show pickleball helps maintain cognitive sharpness, making split-second decisions on the court—it’s as good for the brain as it is for the heart.
