Since 1985, America has celebrated Park and Recreation Month in July to promote building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation.
This year’s theme, “Build Together, Play Together, ” reminds us of the contributions of more than 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals — along with hundreds of thousands of part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers — who maintain our country’s close-to-home parks.
- Together, we’re building and maintaining sustainable parks and green spaces for current and future generations.
- Together, we’re building thriving communities focused on health and well-being.
- Together, we’re building high-quality programs and spaces accessible and inclusive for all.
- Together, we help people play and connect – through yoga, art classes, picnics and more.
Month Long Activities
Parks Scavenger Hunt
Celebrate Park and Recreation Month with a fun, interactive adventure through Georgetown’s parks. Your mission? Visit ten participating parks, follow the clues to locate hidden boxes and crack the puzzle inside each one.
Each lock box contains either a phrase or a number – write it down on your Parks Passport to complete the challenge. Once you’ve visited all ten parks and decoded all of the clues, head to the Georgetown Recreation Center to claim your prize!
How it works:
- Pick up a Parks Passport from the Georgetown Recreation Center, 1003 N. Austin Ave. (or download and print at home)
- Visit the ten parks during the month of July and follow the clues to find the lock box.
- Solve the puzzle inside the box and record your answer.
- Turn in your completed passport at the Georgetown Recreation Center by August 1 to claim your prize! (one prize per child)
