Press Release by Wilco K-9 Unit
Georgetown, TX – The Williamson County Sheriff K-9 Unit attended the First Annual Lubbock Narcotic/Fugitive Apprehension K-9 Seminar this past June 24–27, 2025, for some educational training and bonding time. The event took place in Lubbock, Texas, and was hosted by the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office.
The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office operates a training academy that provides in-service training, mandatory courses, and continuing education courses for Lubbock and area Peace Officers, Communication Operators, Constables, and Detention Officers (Jailers). In addition, the academy provides licensing certification classes for Basic Peace Officers, Basic Telecommunicators, and Basic Jailers.
“It was an opportunity for our unit to continue to expand our knowledge to excel at what we do, as well as for our K-9s, to serve and protect our communities,” says Sergeant Albert Ortiz, head of the Williamson County Sheriff K-9 Unit. “We have a vital role in community education, overdose prevention efforts, and the identification of resources for individuals and families impacted by substance abuse.”
The week ended with a friendly competition among all of the participants from across the state of Texas. The Williamson County Sheriff K-9 Team was among the top winners, bringing home the following trophies:
Narcotics Detection
• 2nd Place – Deputy Sylvania Stoke and K9 Rodin
• 3rd Place – Deputy Charles Duvall and K9 Kato
Patrol/Apprehension
• 3rd Place – Deputy Derrick Johnson and K9 Jayko
The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Academy is an approved training site for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. This designation allows the Sheriff’s Academy to host training on a national basis and brings advanced specialized training to Lubbock and a fourteen-state region.
