Williams Drive Construction Begins Sept. 16 Between Serenada and Lakeway

If you drive Williams Drive regularly, mark your calendar: crews break ground this week on the next phase of the road’s long-awaited makeover. Starting Tuesday, work begins on a new raised median between Serenada and Lakeway, meaning some familiar left turns are about to disappear for a while.

Here’s what the City wants you to know before the cones go up.

Construction starts Sept. 16 on Williams Drive Enhancement Project

The City of Georgetown is continuing improvements along Williams Drive between Austin Avenue and Jim Hogg Road to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and improve traffic flow.

The Williams Drive Enhancement Project is being constructed in phases, with median construction beginning this month. This phase of the project includes building a raised center median, adding street lighting and landscaping, and upgrading intersections and traffic signals from Serenada Drive to Lakeway Drive. Construction is anticipated to be complete in late 2027, weather, field conditions, and work progress permitting.

Starting Sept. 16, crews will begin building a new raised median on Williams Drive between Serenada Drive and Lakeway Drive as part of the City’s ongoing effort to improve safety and traffic flow. Once construction begins, the existing center turn lane will be removed, and drivers will no longer be able to make left turns across the roadway in this section. Access to neighborhoods and businesses will remain available, though some traffic movements and access points will change.

Residents, businesses, and drivers can stay informed about construction progress, traffic changes, and lane closures by visiting the project website and signing up for project updates.

Georgetown’s New PickleTex Facility Opens with Nine Covered Pickleball Courts

If you’ve noticed the growing crowd of paddle-wielding neighbors around town, you’re not imagining it. Pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and Georgetown’s newest facility is betting big on that momentum.

PickleTex, located at 6827 W State Hwy 29, opened to meet a need General Manager Melissa Rubey says was hard to ignore. “There are a lot [of courts] being built, but still not nearly enough,” Rubey said. Local surveys backed that up too, showing most players wanted to play outdoors, but under cover. So that’s exactly what PickleTex built.

The facility features nine covered and lighted Pro-Cushion courts designed for players of every skill level, from first-timers to seasoned competitors. PickleTex offers open play, court reservations, coaching, clinics, and events for both members and non-members. When you’re ready for a break, there’s a pro shop, concessions, and air-conditioned restrooms on site.

Its location along Highway 29 puts it within easy reach for players coming from Liberty Hill, Leander, and Georgetown alike, making it a natural gathering spot for the broader community.

“We aim to create a welcoming atmosphere for players of all skill levels, building community through the shared enjoyment of the fastest-growing sport in America,” the team shared.

Georgetown Police Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting on the Square

Officer-Involved Shooting on Georgetown Square: What Police Chief Cory Tchida Has Confirmed

The Georgetown Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon in the 100 block of W. 7th Street, on the Georgetown Square. Police Chief Cory Tchida addressed the incident directly with media on scene Saturday afternoon.

According to Chief Tchida, officers were dispatched at approximately 12:49 p.m. for a suspicious person call. Callers reported that a male subject was acting erratically and jumping on vehicles, including cars that were passing by. Officers arrived on scene at approximately 12:55 p.m. and located a subject matching the description given in the call. Chief Tchida said the subject was immediately confrontational and advanced toward officers.

Chief Tchida stressed that the information released so far is preliminary, as the involved officers are still being interviewed. Based on the department’s current understanding, the subject indicated to officers that he had a gun and reached for his waistband. Officers determined he did not have a gun in his waistband, but he continued to advance, and officers went hands-on. The struggle went to the ground, involved at least four officers, and became, in Chief Tchida’s words, “extremely violent.” During the struggle, the subject attempted to remove a handgun from one of the officers’ holsters. Chief Tchida said it is unclear whether the gun was fully removed from the holster before a shot was heard. Officers then broke contact, and one officer fired their weapon, striking the subject.

Officers immediately began providing medical care to the man. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Chief Tchida said the exact number of shots fired has not yet been determined and will be established through the investigation, including a review of body camera footage and shell casing evidence.

Speculation circulated online Saturday suggesting an active-shooter situation on the Square. Chief Tchida said he did not know the origin of those reports, speculating that bystanders may have heard the gunshot and assumed the worst. He said the department moved quickly to clarify there was no active shooter and no threat to the public beyond the immediate time of the incident.

Chief Tchida said the investigation remains in its early stages. Body camera footage and any video from bystanders will need to be reviewed to determine the exact nature of the struggle. He noted the Square was busy for a Saturday afternoon and that investigators anticipate interviewing a significant number of witnesses, which is expected to extend the investigation’s timeline.

On the department’s use of force, Chief Tchida said officers are trained on when force is and is not appropriate, and must act in tense, uncertain moments. He said that, based on what is known so far, officers used the level of force the situation required, though the investigation is ongoing. Toxicology information for the man who died will be determined through an autopsy, according to Chief Tchida.

The officer involved is physically uninjured. Chief Tchida said the department’s focus in the coming days will include supporting the officer’s mental well-being, noting the psychological impact of using deadly force.

Chief Tchida, who has been with the department for roughly 30 years, said this is the first officer-involved shooting he’s aware of on the Georgetown Square. He said the department has not had a fatal officer-involved shooting since 2020.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation, with assistance from the Georgetown Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division. The identities of the man who died and the officers involved have not been released; GPD says that information will come once required notifications are complete.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Assist RN in providing health services to students. Assist RN in promoting health education and preventive health practices for students.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Nursing Services

Ability to work independently in cases where RN is unavailable.
Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to district policy and procedures.
Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).
Administer First Aid/CPR/AED when necessary.
Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.
Perform state-mandated vision, hearing, spinal, and Acanthosis Nigricans screenings and refer students as needed. Enter screening data for state reporting by the district deadlines.
Evaluate students for communicable diseases/conditions and follow state reporting and exclusion requirements.

Instruction

Assist RN with providing health counseling and instruction to individual students.

Consultation

Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.
Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.
Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees.
Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.

Administration

Review, evaluate, and maintain student immunization records in compliance with state immunization requirements.
Enforce procedures to ensure proper program administration according to district policy.
Supervise and train nurse aide(s) in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy.
Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.

Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
Assist RN to develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.

Maintain confidentiality following FERPA and HIPPA requirements.
Assist RN with completing AED checks monthly of all building on campus.
Assist RN with completing Stop the Bleed Kits checks monthly for expiration and replacement in all buildings.
