UPDATE: We’ve just learned that thanks to a GoFundMe set up to cover pet portraits for families from a variety of artists, the pet portraits being offered by Amanda Hoxworth are now fully covered and free of charge to the families!
ORIGINAL STORY: A local artist is offering discounted pet portraits to families who lost pets in a tragic fire at Ponderosa Pet Resort on Saturday, September 18.
The City of Georgetown has reported the 75 dogs who passed away belonged to 59 families. Amanda Hoxworth, told Hello Georgetown, she wants to use her skills as an artist to bring comfort to those families who are grieving.
“I think art can be really healing and really comforting and especially to lose a pet so unexpectedly, I feel like having something tangible can be really meaningful,” Hoxworth said.
As a pet parent herself, when Hoxworth first started watercolor painting, she made it a goal to be able to paint her own dogs. Now, her art has expanded from her own watercolor pieces and her own pets’ portraits, and hopes she can provide something tangible as the families heal.
“It means a lot to me when I’m able to capture a pet’s personality, the heart behind them, the energy of them,” Hoxworth said. “I typically do watercolor portraits with watercolor and ink, so a little bit of pen and then some watercolor. They’re always very colorful…I try to capture a pet’s personality through color and through movement and that kind of thing.”
Families affected by the Saturday’s tragic fire can purchase a pet portrait for 50% off her usual cost of $150. To order, visit Hoxworth’s Etsy shop here and click “Request Custom Order” (see image above).
