The City of Georgetown will celebrate the grand opening of the Light & Waterworks District Plaza at noon Friday, Dec. 12, in historic downtown Georgetown. Light refreshments will be provided.
“This project reflects our commitment to creating meaningful, people-centered places across Georgetown, while both preserving our history and creating a modern space for residents and visitors alike,” Mayor Josh Schroeder said. “This plaza, which has been years in the making, strengthens our downtown, supports tourism and local businesses, and adds a new venue for arts, events, and everyday fun.”
The Light & Waterworks District Plaza, which is located between the Georgetown Public Library and the historic Light & Waterworks building, was shaped by extensive planning and public input that started in 2018, following a recommendation from the 2014 Downtown Master Plan. The district is a cornerstone of the City Center project, which was designed to blend and link important civic buildings, including the Library, the historic Light & Waterworks building, the Council & Court building, and City Hall, into a cohesive district. The plaza includes a performance stage, an event lawn and shaded pavilion, a dedicated food truck area, and public art.
The district’s name pays tribute to the neighboring Light and Waterworks powerplant, which was built in 1911 and represents the essential services that built this community. The district symbolizes Georgetown’s ongoing commitment to creating vibrant public spaces and enhancing quality of life for residents and visitors.
Covey Landscape Architects and KPA Engineers designed the plaza. Synergy Commercial Construction was the contractor.
The $2.25 million plaza project was funded with revenue from bonds and the Downtown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone.
