Community Thanksgiving, an event for anyone to come enjoy a warm, traditional Thanksgiving meal, will be Thursday, November 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the community center at 445 E. Morrow St. in Georgetown.
Started by Alycia Tandy, Community Thanksgiving is volunteer run by Georgetown firefighters and police officers. They rely on community partners to help plan the event and community members for monetary donations and volunteers to help serve.
“The main idea is that we don’t want anyone to be alone or go without a meal on Thanksgiving,”said Jonathan Gilliam, Georgetown Deputy Fire Marshal. “Come and be with others to share a meal, conversation, smiles and thanks.”
This year’s community partners include The Beard Club, Jimmy Vega Smokehouse, Sonic, HEB #1, GW Pyro, D&L Printing, the City of Georgetown, the Georgetown Police Department, and the Georgetown Fire Department.
Meals are served on a first come, first serve basis and deliveries are available for those who are homebound. Gilliam said they are very excited to have the community back together after the pandemic.
“For those that have never attended it’s a simple process,” Gilliam said. “You join us at the community center and we have volunteers to serve you and tables for you that are decorated by GISD and Gateway students. Volunteers as well as police and firefighters may join you for conversation. Don’t forget to visit the desert table for all the sweet stuff.”
Anyone can attend and eat at Community Thanksgiving or volunteer to serve. Volunteers, sponsors, and monetary donations are still needed. Visit the Community Thanksgiving Facebook page or email gtxthanksgiving@gmail.com with questions or to sign up to help.
